Self & Space - 2011
This body of work was created at the Queen Street Studio residency and exhibited in a solo show in mid-November of that year. The body of work titled “Self and Space” the work explores the relationship between one’s being and the surrounding space. It looks at the blurred line between where the self ends and space begins. Just as the body exists within space, so too does space exist in the body; there are as many infinite layers of space inside the self as outside. For example, when one relives a memory one is both in that space in the past, a head space, and also in the physical space of the body. We are able to project ourselves into an infinite number of possibilities through our imagination. Yet at the same time, when faced with the natural world we are aware of the finite nature of the human condition. It was from this interplay between the physical and the non-physical spaces we encounter that these works were made.
Through form and interactive space this body of work aims to create an experience where the viewer can visualise their relationship to an otherwise unseen space. Using latex as a type of skin these forms map finite and infinite spaces in reference to our perceived awareness of where we exist. So as these works protrude through the outside space, where the body engages, the inside of these works also interact with space in a more intimate way.

Cet ensemble de travaux a été réalisé à l’occasion d’une résidence dans les ateliers de Queen Street Studio et exposé dans une exposition individuelle à la mi-novembre 2011. L’exposition intitulée "Self and Space» explore la relation entre l'être et l'espace environnant. Il se penche sur la ligne floue entre l'endroit où se termine l’être et là où commence l'espace environnant. Similairement à l’existence du corps dans l'espace, l'espace existe dans le corps, et on trouve autant de couches infinies de l'espace à l'intérieur de soi comme à l'extérieur. Par exemple quand un être se remémore un souvenir, il se trouve à la fois dans l’espace mais aussi dans le passé, un espace mental et également un espace physique de l'endroit où le corps est. Nous sommes capables de nous projeter dans un nombre infini de possibilités grâce à notre imagination, mais dans le même temps en face du monde naturel, nous sommes conscients du caractère fini de la condition humaine. C'est à partir de cette interaction entre les espaces physiques et non physiques que nous rencontrons que ces travaux ont été effectués.
A travers une interactivité de la forme et de l’espace, cet ensemble de travaux visait à créer une expérience où les spectateurs peuvent visualiser leurs relations à un espace autrement invisible. En utilisant le latex comme une représentation de la peau, ces formes cartographiaient les espaces finis et infinis en référence à notre conscience perçue de l'endroit où nous existons. Alors que ces travaux font comme une saillie à travers l'espace extérieur où le corps s'engage, l'intérieur de ces œuvres interagit aussi avec l'espace d'une manière plus intime.
